The principle of operation has many variants, the most basic being the use of a shuttle plate with a fixed or adjustable cavity.

The cavity is moved under a hopper of free flowing material, and then shuttled over the container to dispense the fill. The size of the cavity determines the amount dispensed.

The shuttle plate may have multiple cavities for higher production rates.
